Toby Greene has emerged from quarter time wearing a helmet to cover the cut on the back of his head.

That is a new look for the Giants skipper.

Jesse Hogan’s goal on the siren has the Giants just ahead after a controversial end to a very contested, pressure-filled quarter.

Jack Ginnivan was streaming through the centre square when he was tackled across the head and spun round. He kept running and play on was called but he was barely a step and a half along when a Giants chaser tackled him from the side.

Holding the ball was called and the Giants broke out finding Hogan on the lead and he kicked the goal just before the siren rang out.

Both sides are kicking poorly for goal but it is a fun, aggressive contest so far.

Sam Frost made an exceptional help play defensively sprinting across to assist a teammate who had been wrestled out of position by Giants skipper Toby Greene.

Frost made the spoil, it was an elite piece of defending, but in the process Frost’s elbow got the back of Greene’s head and he has left a nasty cut.

Greene jogged off with blood leaking from the back of his head. He is now being patched up.

Age sports journalist Andrew Wu is unhappy that the Giants are not in their charcoal coloured guernsey today instead of their orange strip.

I wonder if the AFL deemed that the brown shorts and stripes of Hawthorn were too close to that tone compared to the gold and against orange.

Leek Aleer was taking the big marks in his club’s last match, this time he was out-jumped by Mabior Chol who flew high and pulled in a mark while bumping the Giants big man out of the contest.

Brilliant mark. And he converted the goal as well.

Hawks 9, GWS 7 with seven mins to go in Q1.

It has been a very contested start to the match as both teams are desperate for the win but GWS’s Xavier O’Halloran has just snapped a kick over his head for the opening major.

Harvey Thomas did some excellent work on the ground to keep the ball in control of the Giants and O’Halloran took his chance to score.

The Hawks had the best of the early chances but couldn’t convert, GWS have shown they are more efficient in front of goal.

GWS 7, Hawks 3 with 10 mins to go in Q1.

Dylan Moore’s snap for goal was touched on the line just before it went over, as a Giants player leapt high and tipped the end of the ball before it crossed.

Moore under struck his kick, but it was some impressive athleticism from the Giants.

“That is not the padding, that is the stitching on the padding,” Fox Footy’s Dermott Brereton joked.

Hawks 1, GWS 0 with 15 mins to go in Q1.

These two charts show the difference in Hawthorn’s stats since Will Day’s return.
