It seems that not even a lucrative contract extension will be enough to save Bill Belichick if the Patriots lose again this coming Sunday.
New England plays the Indianapolis Colts this weekend in the last of the NFL‘s international games for 2023. The contest in Frankfurt, Germany could be Belichick‘s last in charge of the Pats, as his future with the organization looks murkier than ever.
Kraft’s patience running thin
The Boston Globe has reported that Patriots owner Robert Kraft is losing patience with Belichick amid New England‘s crisis-ridden campaign. Shockingly, the Patriots have the worst record in the AFC after so many years at the top of the conference — and the NFL as a whole.
If the Pats lose to Gardner Minshew and the 4-5 Colts at Deutsche Bank Park, Kraft could utilize New England’s forthcoming bye week to fire Belichick and install linebackers coach Jerod Mayo — who played his entire eight-season career under Belichick — as the interim head coach.
New England is a slim 1.5-point underdog against Indianapolis on Sunday. The Patriots have not started 2-8 since 2000 — Belichick’s first season in charge.

A separate report claims that Kraft and New England‘s leadership has already identified their top target should Belichick be removed as head coach — and it’s another of the six-time Super Bowl winner’s former stalwarts.
Mike Vrabel, who now coaches the Tennessee Titans, is reportedly the leading candidate to be New England’s next permanent head coach. The organization is also eyeing Houston Texans executive Nick Caserio to run its front office, as Belichick has held both head coach and general manager roles for several years.
Vrabel would be tough to pry free from Tennessee. The former linebacker has multiple years left on his contract, and New England would have to offer significant assets — likely a first-round draft pick, for starters — in order to get the Titans to pick up the phone.
