The future of American tennis has a clear candidate to carry it into the 2030s and it is none other than Ben Shelton.
At 20 years of age, the Atlanta native, represented by Team8, Roger Federer‘s company, has qualified for the second time in his career for the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.
He repeated on Sunday at the US Open what he had done at the Australian Open last January.
On Australian soil, he was knocked out by Tommy Paul, which is why the victory over his fellow American in the last 16 was so sweet at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.
Ben Shelton’s 239 km/h serve
Shelton emerged victorious with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Paul had to applaud his compatriot on several occasions, one of them after Shelton hit a serve at 239 kilometers per hour. It was the point that put him 30-0 up in the fifth game of the third set.
The young left-hander awaits the winner of the match between Frances Tiafoe and Rinky Hijikata.
