Solly March has been challenged to be like a ‘winger for the big teams’ and keep the goals flowing this season to keep Brighton flying high.

Right winger March, 29, netted twice in top-of-the-table Seagulls’ second-half blitz in their win at Wolves to make it successive 4-1 victories.

‘My target for the season is 15 goals,’ March said. ‘It’s still a long way to go but it’s been a good start. I was looking at it with some coaches before the game and they were saying I had to bust a gut to get in the box and it worked a treat. The deliveries were perfect.’

The 15-goal diktat has come from Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.

‘I spoke with him and I want more goals from him,’ the Italian said. ‘If you check the top of the table, the wingers for the big teams score 10, 15 goals a season.’

March’s finishes were clinical after Pervis Estupinan had made it 2-0, but it was fellow winger Kaoru Mitoma’s wonder goal to open the scoring that will live in the memory.

The Japan international, 26, beat four players in a surging run from the left touchline and March said it was as the ball was glued to his team-mate’s foot.

It was a goal that will only add to the adoration Mitoma receives in his homeland, with observers saying he is creating the most interest in any Japanese player since Shinji Kagawa was playing and scoring for Borussia Dortmund.

‘It was incredible — I think he stuck some glue on his boot before the game!’ said March. ‘You don’t see many players glide with the ball like that.

‘To have the strength to hold off a couple of players is something considering he’s quite slight, like me.

‘Then to have the composure and desire to finish — as he could have gone down and won a foul — made it amazing.’

New Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil has seen his side lose their first two games but is convinced his high-intensity way of playing is the way forward. ‘I prefer to be aggressive,’ said O’Neil. ‘We’ll be flexible but let’s try to keep creating the number of chances we do, shore ourselves up in terms of chances conceded and try to be more clinical.’
