Health authorities have notified parents of a case of whooping cough at a private school in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

An email sent to parents and staff says the Metro North Public Health Unit has confirmed a case at St Peters Lutheran College.

The highly infectious disease, also known as pertussis, causes coughing and sneezing, and can be life-threatening in babies and young children.

Parents have been urged to make sure their children are up to date with routine vaccinations, and see their doctor if they have any symptoms.
