Holidaymakers watching the tragic scene from the beach called emergency services who rushed to the scene.

They spent half an hour trying to revive him on the sand but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The unnamed tourist’s wife had been with him at the time but stayed on the shoreline while he went swimming, according to local reports.

They are understood to have travelled to Menorca to celebrate his birthday.
