It’s become commonly known and accepted that Angel Hernandez is one of, if not the worst umpire in Major League Baseball. Hernandez frequently makes headlines due to missed strike-ball calls, but on Thursday night he stepped his game up from the third base line.
Umpiring the Philadelphia Phillies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game, Hernandez made a call so bad that it forced a player to go insane and subsequently get ejected by Hernandez himself.

Bryce Harper was up at the plate in a 3-2 count. He checked his swing on a low curveball and began to take off his shinguard as he got ready to go to first base with a walk. Instead, the home plate umpire appealed to Hernandez, who called Harper out by saying his check swing crossed the plate.

Harper couldn’t believe it and proceeded to curse at and approach Hernandez. The umpire ejected him swiftly, but Harper let him have it before he left the diamond.
When the broadcast feed finally showed the replay of the check swing, the broadcast team was in utter shock: “Oh my goodness. Goodness gracious. That is just terrible“. And they’re right, because it wasn’t even close.
As Harper exited the field, he launched his helmet into the stands, where a young Phillies fan was able to come away with it. It was a cool moment as is, but Harper even went so far as to find the fan and sign the helmet for him.
Tonight’s game didn’t have an impact on the Phillies season, as Philadelphia is locked into the first Wild Card spot. Still, Hernandez – and umpires in general – needs to be held accountable for his constant mistakes.
