Iowa’s standout guard, Caitlin Clark, recently made history by shattering the NCAA‘s all-time scoring record, a feat unprecedented not just among women but across all of Division I basketball.

Interestingly, Clark‘s trajectory could have led her to donning a Notre Dame uniform. ESPN’s Wright Thompson recounts in a story that her high school coach, Kristin Meyer, initially believed she was bound for South Bend.

“For a while, I thought she was gonna end up at Notre Dame.” Thompson told ESPN.

Clark‘s family and her high school community were all rooting for her to join the Irish squad.

Why didn’t Clark sign with Notre Dame?

In fact, Clark even reached out to Iowa‘s head coach, Lisa Bluder, to deliver the disappointing news that the highly-touted in-state talent had intentions of playing for Notre Dame. However, no formal commitment was publicly announced.

The turning point for Notre Dame came during Clark‘s official visit to the campus. Despite her initial hopes of embracing the experience, Clark found herself grappling with disappointment.

“She wanted to love it. In fact, she got frustrated with herself for not loving it.”

Ultimately, this led her to forge a path to Iowa City, where she would go on to achieve record-breaking success. For Notre Dame, it remains another intriguing “what-if” scenario.

Clark still has to decide what comes next in her career, whether she declares for the WNBA draft or remain in college for a further year. Due to her NIL worth, there is an argument to be made that she would make far more money by staying in college for another season than if she elected to turn professional.
