Saul Alvarez has decided to vacate his title because he does not want to face William Scull, which means he would no longer be the undisputed super middleweight champion.
According to BoxingScene, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) gave Canelo an ultimatum to face the Cuban mandatory contender.

He will have until June 6 to give his definitive answer, but it is understood Alvarez is set to refuse the chance to face Scull.
The 31-year-old is unbeaten with 22 victories and nine KOs, having beaten Sean Hemphill by unanimous decision in Las Vegas earlier in May.
It should be stated that, under IBF rules, the Mexican boxer will have to give an opportunity to take on the ‘unknown’ Scull. However, Canelo, 33, remains unconvinced by Scull and isn’t keen on fighting him.

If he rejects the mandatory fight, Saul Alvarez will be stripped of his title and he would no longer be the undisputed super middleweight champion – a title he has held since November 2021 when he defeated Caleb Plant.
For their part, the World Boxing Association (WBA) insist that Canelo’s mandatory challenger has to be Brooklyn’s Edgar Berlanga (WBA), and next in line is Daryl Peoples (IBF).

It should be noted that after his victory against Jaime Munguía, Alvarez claimed all five 168-pound belts (WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF and The Ring).
With this, he entered the select list of Mexican boxing of four-time world champions, joining the likes of Erick ‘El Terrible’ Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez.
At the age of 33, the Mexican boxer has a record of 61 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws, putting him up there with some of the finest fighters of all time, and for that reason he may have his sights set on a bigger opponent.
