Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has been warned he may not be able to dictate terms when it comes to negotiating his purse in the future after his fight with Jaime Munguia failed to attract a big audience.

Despite being billed as one of the biggest boxing match-ups in recent Mexican history, reported figures from the May 4 fight estimate that only 500,000 to 550,000 viewers signed up for the pay-per-view (PPV) event.

Jake Paul lays out his plan to fight Canelo Alvarez

This may be related to the fact the fight took place on the eve of Cinco de Mayo (The Day of the Dead), a holiday celebrated by most Mexicans. In any case, the numbers don’t lie and it offers an ominous look in the future of boxing, according to Rick Glaser.

The IBHOF Elector appeared to suggest Canelo, 33, may have to explore setting up fights with opponents he has avoided, such as David Benavidez and Terence Crawford, to top up his earnings.

IBHOF Elector wrote on his X handle: “If in fact the #CaneloMunguia PPV number is the purported 500,000 to 550,000, the good news for #Boxing enthusiasts is that translates to #Canelo must fight #Crawford & #Benavidez types to continue to earn the purses he’s been receiving!!! Reality is if that number is correct, it’s another #PBC financial bloodbath!!!”

Will Canelo fight Crawford or Benavidez next?

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who has previously worked with Alvarez, believes that the Mexican is not interested in fighting against Crawford due to their weight difference.

“When I met Saul, he wasn’t crazy on that [Crawford] fight,” Hearn said. “He just felt that you have got a welterweight coming up to light-middleweight, going up to super-middleweight and that he wouldn’t get any credit for that win.

“Everyone would say ‘you are fighting a 147lber, [you should be winning]’, but Crawford is really, really good and I think Saul likes fighting now. As Saul has made it very, very clear – money is pretty much the only motivator for him right now.”

However, Hearn did add that if Alvarez would fight “anyone” if the financial terms were tempting enough – and predicted a future fight with Benavidez.

“I think that he would pick Benavidez over Crawford because he knows he would get the credit for that victory,” Hearn added. “Whereas he might not for fighting a guy [Crawford] that is three or four divisions lower.”
