Oscar De La Hoya has always been a bit of a divisive figure; after all, he was dubbed “The Golden Boy” during his fighting days. He didn’t have too many controversial moments as a boxer, but he has negatively steered into the limelight since becoming a promoter.

De La Hoya has never been afraid to be blunt, and that has rubbed some of the fighters he’s worked with the wrong way. Most recently, he has gotten into verbal wars with Ryan Garcia and Canelo Alvarez. While Garcia is still a Golden Boy fighter, Canelo has moved on.

Canelo unleashes on De La Hoya

Ahead of his fight against Jermell Charlo this Saturday, Alvarez was asked by the Full Send Podcast about no longer working with De La Hoya. Canelo answered honestly and unabashedly: “I’m glad to go away from him. He’s f***ing crazy. He’s a hypocrite.

Canelo mentioned De La Hoya’s current rift with Garcia and said that no one wants to work with him.

He’s certainly on to something, as Golden Boy has struggled to sign and maintain top-end fighters in recent years, particularly with Top Rank, PBC and Matchroom Boxing continually growing.

De La Hoya has struggled with substance abuse issues in the past, for which he has been in rehab for. He tends to be slightly hot-headed, which poses problems while dealing with young fighters who are cut from the same cloth.

Canelo left Golden Boy Promotions in late 2020 before signing with Matchroom. Alvarez then surprisingly left to join PBC for a massive three-fight deal.

While Garcia is coming off of a disappointing loss to Gervonta Davis, De La Hoya must mend the relationship and make sure Garcia doesn’t follow Canelo’s path to other promoters.
