More than six years ago, Super Bowl winner Aaron Hernandez passed away inside a jail cell after he was found hanging in what was ruled a suicide. He was serving a sentence after murdering brother in law, Odin Lloyd in 2013. After six years, Las Vegas Raiders‘ Chandler Jones is casting a shadow of doubt on Aaron Hernandez’s death and the details of his passing. For weeks now, Jon Jones’ brother has been struggling with mental health issues and was even admitted to mental health facility from which he already checked out. In the recent livestream he posted, Jones asks about the nature of Aaron Hernandez’s death and starts crying uncontrollably. A look that will not only concern his followers but also the Las Vegas Raiders’ leadership.
Chandler Jones responds to Twitter trolls
As a response to this video, multiple pro athletes who are no longer playing the game expressed their concern over Chandler Jones. He quickly started responding to many of them by antagonizing many of their posts. Some ask for prayers in his favor and others simply express they are deeply concerned about his mental health. But none of these responses truly deal with the massive elephant in the room. Erratic behavior has connected many athletes such as Jones, Antonio Brown, and even the late Aaron Hernandez himself. The NFL won’t truly deal with this issue because the implcations have the potential to kill one of the biggest sports industries in the world.
Chandler Jones is just the latest example of the effects CTE has on football players, an issue that has been present for decades in the NFL. There is little chance this problem will be addressed by Commissioner Roger Goodell because it tampers directly with the business. Acknowledging this is a prevalent problem will scare away all sponsors and turn American football into a fringe subject matter. This issue does seem like it will remain unresolved as more players keep emerging whole showcasing the effects of CTE. We will keep waiting to see who is the brave soul that comes forward against the league in order to push it for real change.
