Chelsea do not need to make any urgent player sales to comply with 2023/24 Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules, it has been revealed.
The Blues have overseen two years of record-setting spending but, with results on the pitch falling well below expectation, revenue has been disappointing, leading to suggestions that Chelsea have breached financial regulations.
Homegrown talents like Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah have regularly been touted for quick sales to raise money before the PSR deadline of June 30, 2024, but it appears that Chelsea may not need to rush into any departures.
“They [Chelsea] do not need to make sales is my understanding to comply for 2023/24,” The Athletic’s David Ornstein said during an appearance on NBC Sports.
“The cut-off [for 2023-24] is June 30. They will need to make sales to comply for 2024-25. The cut-off [for 2024-2025], is obviously the end of the transfer window in August and then January.”
Chelsea are still expected to listen to offers for a number of players this summer but may have greater flexibility to negotiate, giving them the freedom to hold out for bigger potential fees.
Shortly after Ornstein’s statements, claims emerged on social media appearing to show Chelsea’s owners pushing ahead with plans to sell the club’s Cobham training ground to themselves for a significant sum.
Such a move would count towards Chelsea’s operating profits as, unlike the Football League, Premier League rules do not exclude profits made by the sales of assets like stadiums and training grounds, and club owners previously voted against blocking these sales to club owners.
Should Chelsea have raised that sort of money, it would explain their continued confidence heading into what could be another hectic transfer window.
The Blues want a new striker, with Victor Osimhen of Napoli an expensive target and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko seen as a cheaper alternative.
A new centre-back could be sought, while Chelsea are also pushing ahead with plans to sign 17-year-old Palmeiras winger Estevao for around £50m.
