The Chicago Bears have made a surprising move by trading receiver Chase Claypool and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick, according to league sources. This trade comes after Claypool was a healthy scratch for the Bears’ recent loss to the Denver Broncos and was not present with the team during their victory over the Washington Commanders on “Thursday Night Football.”

Bears coach Matt Eberflus explained the decision to keep Claypool away from the facility this week, stating: “We thought it was best for the team.” The 25-year-old receiver, who was acquired by Chicago in a trade last season, has only recorded 18 receptions in 10 games with the Bears.

The situation leading up to this trade began when Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles informed Claypool that he would not be active for the game against the Broncos.

Eberflus did not disclose how Claypool reacted to this news, simply stating: “We’ll keep it there. It’s between me and him.” On Monday, both Eberflus and Poles called Claypool again to inform him that he would be staying home during the week while the team prepared for their game against the Commanders.

Eberflus emphasized that the decision was made with the team’s best interest in mind, saying: “We thought it was best for the team.” He reiterated this message multiple times during his news conference, emphasizing the importance of being on time, respectful, and hardworking.

Claypool wasn’t happy with the Bears

Claypool had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with how the Bears were utilizing his skill set, but Eberflus stated that his reaction to those comments was not the primary factor in the decision. Instead, Eberflus focused on what he observed during meetings, walk-throughs, and practices with Claypool, stating: “We have a standard for that; we have standards for that. And if those standards are met, then everything’s good. If it’s not, then it’s not.”

This move comes after Claypool faced criticism earlier in the season for what appeared to be minimal effort in blocking and running routes during Chicago’s Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers. Claypool later apologized to his teammates for his lackluster performance.
