Chris Eubank Jr. feared that his career may come to a resounding halt after his initial defeat to Liam Smith, however the British boxing star won the rematch convincingly and is now setting his sights on loftier goals.
Eubank Jr‘s loss to Smith has been put down as an aberration, caused by a momentary lack of preparation and control which stemmed from the late change preventing him from fighting Conor Benn in one of the biggest British fights for a generation.
It wasn’t a clear knock on his ability like Ricky Hatton’s defeats to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were, this was a bump in the road.
Eubank Jr. is determined to prove that by taking on arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter around at this time… Canelo Alvarez.
Fresh from defeating Jermell Charlo on Saturday evening, the Mexican is back on course to continue his dominant era following a shock loss to Dmitry Bivol.
Eubank Jr. wants to take the high-profile victory
When quizzed on his future plans, Eubank Jr. left no one in any doubt, he wants to take on the Mexican and he wants that high-value scalp on his resume, before perhaps returning to Britain to take on Benn, if he is ever cleared to fight after his unpleasant drug-test issue.
“Canelo needs to fight someone who’s going to get in there and put it on his ass,” Eubank Jr. tweeted.
“Someone who actually wants to win not just survive, secure a payday and give him a sweet lil hug after.
“This sh** is getting embarrassing. I don’t want a hug… I want that scalp!”
Eubank Jr. may well find it challenging to get a shot at Canelo, who seems intent of avenging his loss to Bivol.
There is also the potential stumbling block that comes in the form of Eddie Hearn being in charge of Canelo’s schedule.
He and Eubank Jr. don’t have the best rapport after the issues with Benn and the canceled fight, even if the fact he is a fellow Brit would be a window-opener for Eubank Jr. to make his way stateside and fight Canelo.
