Speculation is rife as a recent screenshot from the UFC‘s exclusive streaming platform, Fight Pass, points to the possibility of Conor McGregorheadlining the upcoming UFC 296 pay-per-view event on December 16 in Las Vegas. The tantalizing snapshot suggests that McGregor could be squaring off against Michael Chandler in what could be an explosive showdown.

However, it’s important to approach this news with caution, as the legitimacy of the screenshot remains uncertain. The source of the image and its authenticity are yet to be verified. Nevertheless, if the screenshot holds true, it could signal an imminent official announcement in the following weeks, or even days.

The realm of uncertainty surrounding McGregor’s return to the octagon and whether it would materialize in 2023, let alone against Chandler, has been partially dispelled by McGregor himself. In a revelation earlier this month, the Irish fighter disclosed his intention to step into the ring against the former Bellator champion come December.

Presently, McGregor’s absence from the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) drug testing pool raises questions. To be eligible for competition, he must provide a minimum of two negative samples over a span of six months. While other fighters in the UFC may not receive similar leeway, indications suggest that McGregor could be granted a special exemption from the stringent drug-testing regulations.

An impending clash that divides fighters but ignites fans

While this development might be met with mixed reactions from fellow fighters, it undoubtedly brings elation to the legions of McGregor enthusiasts, particularly Chandler, who has been eagerly awaiting the confirmation of this showdown.

The potential McGregor-Chandler clash, if realized, could cap off the year in a spectacular fashion. In a fortuitous alignment of events, the newly crowned bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley, expressed his desire to defend his title against Marlon Vera in December.

The intriguing question arises: could UFC 296 witness McGregor vs. Chandler as the main event, with O’Malley vs. Vera serving as a riveting co-main event? The possibility appears plausible, especially given that O’Malley himself initiated the idea on social media. Shedding light on a recent interaction, O’Malley shared on The Pat McAfee Show,Conor [McGregor] messaged me on Instagram for the first time yesterday. He said, ‘Baby we did it,’ and I said, ‘We sure f-ing did!‘”

O’Malley continued, “I said, ‘You main eventing in December, I’m co-main eventing?’ All he replied was, ‘Shot caller.’ I don’t know what that means, but I feel like I kinda do so I’m hoping that’s a yes in f-ing Irish.

As the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place, the MMA world is on the edge of its seat, eagerly anticipating an electrifying series of events that could culminate in an unforgettable UFC 296.
