Dak Prescott continues to live in the shadow of back-up quarterback Cooper Rush as he prepares to embark on another NFL season.

We are now just two months away from the 2023 NFL season, and Prescott is among a group of quarterbacks who have questions to answer. Despite bursting onto the scene with the Dallas Cowboys, Prescott has seen his reputation fade over the course of the last two seasons or more, beginning with his horrific ankle injury during the 2020 season.

Prescott has had a losing record just once in his seven seasons with Dallas, and that came when he bowed out of the 2020 season with the ankle injury at 2-3. With the exception of one 8-8 campaign, the 29-year-old has been above .500, and he ended last season with a record of 8-4 in what was an impressive 12-5 season for Mike McCarthy‘s men, even if they did go on to lose in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Prescott did, however, lead the league in interceptions last year, and with back-up quarterback Cooper Rush holding down the fort with an impressive 4-1 record during Prescott‘s absence with injury, there have been calls for Rush to get a chance as a starter.

Fresh criticism

Fox Sports’ Joy Taylor recently said during an episode of Speak: “Dak Prescott is not that talented. He’s good enough to get a team to the playoffs. He’s good enough to have a high-flying offense, good regular season record, win a division, and all of those things are inherently good things; they make you a franchise quarterback.

“But we don’t have to talk about you as if you are a Super Bowl contender doing that. Get to an NFC Championship game. Dak has been the reason they have lost multiple years against the same team.”

In an episode of The Herd, popular NFL pundit Colin Cowherd agreed, adding: “Dak Prescott says ‘turning 30, there’s a real sense of urgency.’ Dak has urgency the next two years and age doesn’t have anything to do with it. Less than a year away, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Michael Penix Jr., all ‘A’ prospects, may all end up in the NFC because all the potentially awful teams are mostly in the NFC.

Dak is not young nor cheap, nor is he a superstar talent, and that’s how you win Super Bowls. He’s a reflection of his roster more than he elevates it. He is the longest tenured quarterback for any team in the league and I know exactly what he is.

“It is ridiculous to think he’s going to ‘pop’ this year. You don’t think Kirk Cousins is going to ‘pop’ this year because you know what Kirk Cousins is.”

Prescott has plenty of questions to answer, but he will go into the new season as the Cowboys‘ starter, and with Brian Schottenheimer calling the offense following Kellen Moore‘s departure.
