Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch has bid farewell to the NFL, announcing his retirement at the age of 28. The decision wasn’t fueled by a lack of passion for the game, but rather by the relentless toll his body has taken, particularly due to ongoing neck issues that have plagued him since his college days.

Vander Esch, who suffered a neck injury in November 2023, has been forced to call time on his illustrious six-year career in the NFL. Despite the challenges, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to play the game he loves at the highest level. Speaking via the Dallas Cowboys website, Vander Esch reflected on the cherished moments and blessings his NFL journey bestowed upon him.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also weighed in, commending Vander Esch not only for his on-field prowess but also for his character and leadership qualities. Jones hailed Vander Esch’s journey from eight-man football to becoming a standout in the NFL, underscoring his impact both on and off the field.

Drafted by the Cowboys in 2018, Vander Esch enjoyed a successful tenure with the team, earning accolades such as second-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie season. However, his career was marred by recurring neck injuries and a broken collarbone, leading to surgeries and prolonged absences from the field.

Despite setbacks, Vander Esch showcased resilience, bouncing back with impressive performances, including a standout 2021 campaign. However, the specter of injury loomed large, with his 2023 season cut short due to yet another neck ailment.

Speculation surrounding Vander Esch’s future intensified when the Cowboys released him with a failed physical designation on March 15. Three days later, Vander Esch officially announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy marked by 496 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, and a memorable touchdown scored in his final full NFL game against the New England Patriots on October 1, 2023.

As Vander Esch embarks on the next chapter of his life, the Dallas Cowboys organization extends its gratitude and well-wishes to him, his wife Madalynn, and their young daughter, acknowledging his indelible impact on the team and the sport.
