Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

Crystal Palace are continuing to look dangerous on the break and with Clyne the latest to get forward and send a cross into the box.

He is able to pick anyone out with Liverpool looking to spring a break of their own.

Joel Ward stops the move with a foul and goes into the book.

VAR REVIEW: NO PENALTY

Referee Andy Madley was invited to check the monitor.

Will Hughes barged into the back of Endo in the build-up to the penalty.

After around a three minute delay, Madley decides to overturn the penalty due to the foul on Endo.

Van Dijk’s yellow card for his foul in the area is also cancelled as a result.

The Palace fans are singing about VAR in unfavourable terms, but that definitely looks the right decision.

Nunez might have been offside anyway had he reached it first.

Can Liverpool go top of the Premier League?

The teams are out at Selhurst Park

Both teams are out on the pitch with kick-off moments away.

Here is a reminder of the team news for both sides.

Crystal Palace: Johnstone; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; Lerma, Hughes, Schlupp, Richards, Ayew, Edouard.

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Endo, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Diaz, Salah, Nunez.

Jarrell Quansah partners Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence this afternoon.

Van Dijk has backed the 20-year-old to step up after confirmation Joel Matip has ruptured his ACL and will likely not play again this season.

‘Every time he has had the opportunity so far he has done well,’ Van Dijk said. ‘When the moment is there for him – like every other player who will come in when we rotate or have injuries or suspensions – they have to be ready.

‘That goes for him as well. We still have Ibou, Joey, but Jarell is a very good option as well. In general, for all the younger generation, if you are close to the first team and training with us, you have to soak everything in. And he is doing well.’

Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel has reported that Hodgson’s position at Crystal Palace is under scrunity amid the recent run of results and discontent from the fans.

The preferred scenario for key figures at Selhurst Park has been for Hodgson, whose contract expires in six months, to see out the season ahead of appointing their next boss in the summer.

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper, a long-term managerial target for Palace, remains on the club’s radar and has significant backing at the south London club.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is also admired at Palace, but chances of the former Manchester United assistant walking away from his current side’s Championship promotion challenge appear limited.

‘I feel the pressure for other people’ – Hodgson

Roy Hodgson has just been speaking on TNT Sports ahead of kick-off, with the Crystal Palace boss admitting he still feels the pressure despite being 76.

Hodgson’s side were booed after their defeat against Bournemouth in midweek, with the Eagles now on a run of only one win in eight Premier League games.

‘You feel the pressure for the players in particular and the club, the people at the top of the club because they care so much themselves,’ Hodgson told TNT Sports.

‘You perhaps don’t maybe feel as sorry for yourself as you may have done when you were younger and your career was on the line.

‘I would have to admit that for myself I don’t feel the enormous pressure any more, but I feel the pressure for other people.

‘When the game comes around I am as anxious to win it and as nervous as I have always been. All the time that continues I can continue. If I ever lose that I will know that I don’t have it in me anymore to do the job.

‘That isn’t the case at the moment.’

Jurgen Klopp insists Roy Hodgson was an inspiration to him when he first started in management – but he always asks the Crystal Palace boss why he is still in the dugout at the age of 76.

Klopp’s tongue-in-cheek comments came after the Palace boss has faced intense scrutiny for a run of just one win in the last eight games.

‘When Roy was in Switzerland, he implemented a 4-4-2, so my former manager Wolfgang Frank showed us a lot of videos of him,’ said Klopp. ‘It was Ariggo Sacchi and Roy Hodgson. That was the first time he crossed my way.

‘I am really pleased I met him here in the Premier League because he’s an outstanding person and a really nice man. When I see him I ask him, “What are you doing here?!” But he looks happy, enjoying it.

Liverpool’s visits to Selhurst Park have become a fixture broadcasters tend to snap up every season following the famous ‘Crystanbul’ match during the 2013-14 season.

The Reds have dominated against Palace in recent years and are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League matches against the Eagles.

However both meetings last season ended in draws, with the match at Selhurst Park ending goalless.

Jurgen Klopp has not been shy in his dislike of the Saturday lunchtime slot which Liverpool have found themselves in on numerous ocassions in recent years.

Klopp was particuarly irritiated in midweek when Amazon Prime presenter Marcus Buckland made the light hearted comment that he was back in his ‘favourite kick-off time’.
