Reports out of Texas claim that the Dallas Cowboys have started to engage in extension talks to secure Dak Prescott’s future with the team.

The veteran quarterback is entering the third year of his 4-year $160 million contract.

Prescott wants to be a Cowboy for life

According to a report by Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the team has started to enter into “early discussions” with Prescott and his camp in order to get an extension deal done before the team has to stage similar talks with stars Cee-Dee Lamb and Micah Parsons in the coming seasons.

The quarterback will count for up to $60 million dollars in the team’s salary cap for 2024.

Back in March, the Dallas Morning News had reported that Prescott was looking forward to an extension and that he wanted to be with the Cowboys for the rest of his career.

Prescott was even quoted saying that he expected an extension to happen soon: “Looking forward to an extension. When that time comes, it will happen. I’m with [director of player personnel Stephen Jones], it may just happen overnight. When it happens, it happens. It will be great.”

While an extension announcement could still happen anytime any point during this year, the Cowboys did manage to restructure the quarterback’s contract earlier this offseason to help them navigate their cap space.

Even though the quarterback’s leadership has been in doubt, especially after the team lost to the 49ers in last season’s divisional round by a score of 12-19, it seems that Jerry Jones likes what he sees in training camp from his 7-year veteran under new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and he is willing to continue to bet on him beyond 2025.

Cowboys looking into the future

The Cowboys have an incredibly talented roster of stars on both sides of the field that they won’t want to part ways with, so getting Prescott’s contract out of the way would be seen as a smart move in order to work around the team’s salary cap in the next few seasons.

This is also related to why the team decided to move on from running back Ezekiel Elliot.

With a team focused on further developing their West Coast Offense, there seemed no logical reason why they needed to shell out a big contract to the star runner when they could use that money to secure other skilled position players that will be heavily relied upon in the coming seasons. Instead, Dallas decided to stick with Tony Pollock as their starting running back who will play this season under the franchise tag.

The Boys’ have also already secured the services of star cornerback Trevon Diggs. The standout defensive player will receive over $100 million dollars over the next five years in Dallas.

Meanwhile, the team is still stuck in negotiations with star offensive lineman Zack Martin, who is pushing to get a better deal after signing a six-year $84 million deal back in 2018 that made him the highest-paid offensive guard in the history of the NFL.

Martin hasn’t reported to training camp. This seasons he is expected to make $13.5 million dollars.

Cowboys fans will get to see their team play for the first time in the preseason this Saturday, August 12 when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars at home.
