Dak Prescott is one season away from becoming an unrestricted free agent, and the Dallas Cowboys must act swiftly if they wish to retain him. However, securing Prescott’s services won’t come cheap for Jerry Jones, especially in the wake of the massive contract extension given to Detroit Lions’ star quarterback, Jared Goff.

It was announced on Monday that Goff had signed a substantial deal with the Lions, totaling $212 million. This includes $170 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $53 million for the next four years.

Meanwhile, Prescott is entering the final year of his current contract with the Cowboys. In 2021, Prescott and Jones agreed to a four-year, $160 million deal, with $126 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $40 million.

While Prescott’s current contract is already substantial, it’s an NFL tradition that a superstar’s most recent contract sets the stage for negotiations with another superstar.

Prescott’s next contract

Despite assurances from Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys’ management that they will not let Prescott leave, no negotiations have taken place yet. Prescott has stated that he is not seeking to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL but also has expressed his willingness to explore other options for the 2025 season.

However, Prescott’s agent is likely to push for a contract surpassing that of Goff, who now holds the second-best quarterback contract, behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Cowboys face a dilemma regarding the impact of such a large contract on their salary cap. Such an expenditure would necessitate a reevaluation of their entire recruitment strategy, especially considering the need to allocate budget for contracts of other key players like linebacker Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Prescott vs. Goff

While Prescott and Goff are often compared, especially since they were both drafted in the 2016 Draft by NFC teams, their playing styles and career paths differ significantly. Prescott was drafted 135th overall, well into the fourth round, while Goff was the first overall pick.

In terms of numbers, Prescott has 29,459 yards, 2,595 completions in 3,873 attempts, and 202 touchdown passes. Goff has thrown for 30,429 yards, 2,657 completions on 4,107 attempts, and 185 touchdown passes.

Prescott was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and led the league in touchdown passes in 2023, but he has yet to play in a Super Bowl. Goff has played in two Super Bowls, LIII and LVI, with a record of one win and one loss, but is missing some individual accolades.
