During the initial phase of NFL free agency, the Dallas Cowboys have not been particularly active, with Eric Kendricks being their sole addition to the roster so far. However, the departure of Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans has left a noticeable gap in the running back position, prompting the Cowboys to strategize their approach to revamp the backfield.

According to reports from Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are actively planning to bolster their running game by bringing in both a rookie rusher and a seasoned veteran to provide support and leadership.

“It appears all but certain Dallas will select a running back next month during the draft’s second or third day, which together span the second to seventh rounds,” Michael Gehlken reported.

“That rookie would project for rotational touches as part of a larger backfield committee.”

Elliott and Cook placed on radar

Two prominent names circulating in discussions are Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook, both of whom have garnered significant interest from the franchise.

Elliott, a familiar figure in the Cowboys’ uniform, was originally drafted by the team as the fourth overall pick in 2016. Despite seven seasons of stellar performance, his declining output and substantial contract led to his release during the 2023 offseason. Last season, Elliott suited up for the New England Patriots, contributing 642 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 17 games.

Meanwhile, Dalvin Cook, a former Minnesota Vikings standout, had a mixed 2023 season, splitting time between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, Cook enjoyed four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Vikings after being selected in the second round of the 2017 draft.

However, the Cowboys face financial constraints as they aim to secure either Elliott or Cook, given their current salary cap situation. With approximately $5.1 million left in cap space and the impending need to sign draft picks, Dallas must carefully manage its finances to accommodate the acquisition of a veteran running back.

In Pollard’s absence, Rico Dowdle is expected to step into a more prominent role in the backfield, supported by Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner. These players collectively account for a cap hit of $4,103,334, as indicated by Spotrac.
