Bayern Munich’s poor season continues with Saturday’s trip to Darmstadt, the bottom side in the Bundesliga who seem destined for relegation.

Despite lagging behind Bayer Leverkusen in the title race with around ten games to go, Thomas Tuchel’s side still have big performances in them and showed it by beating Mainz 8-1 last time out. The earlier contest between these sides ended 8-0 to Bayern, despite Joshua Kimmich being sent off after four minutes.

With Darmstadt amassing just 13 points in 25 games, there’s every chance of a similar scoreline if Bayern have indeed turned a corner. There’s still pressure to perform despite that ten-point gap to Leverkusen, with their only chance of silverware being the Champions League.

Here’s 90min’s preview of Darmstadt vs Bayern Munich.

One of the reasons for Darmstadt having such a terrible season is injuries. Matej Maglica and Braydon Manu could return against Bayern, but a host of others remain unavailable.

Fraser Hornby and Marvin Melhem are out for the rest of the season, while Clemens Riedel is not expected to return until May at the earliest. Matthias Bader, Fabian Schnellhardt and Fabian Nurnberger also won’t be available until the end of March, leaving Torsten Lieberknecht with limited options.

Darmstadt predicted lineup vs Bayern Munich (4-4-2): Schuhen; Skarke, Klarer, Isherwood, Franjic; Justvan, Kempe, Muller, Holtmann; Torsiello, Wilhelmsson.

Injuries have been a genuine factor in Bayern’s poor 2023/24 campaign but they have been welcoming some players back in recent weeks. Serge Gnabry came off the bench against Mainz, though he isn’t expected to start here.

Tarek Buchmann is out for the season, as is Bouna Sarr. Kingsley Coman and Noel Aseko-Nkili are both expected to return at the end of March, while April is when Noussair Mazraoui should be seen again.

After beating Mainz so handsomely, Tuchel is not expected to tinker too much with his team.

Bayern predicted lineup vs Darmstadt (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Boey, De Ligt, Kim, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Muller, Musiala; Kane.

Even though Bayern have been terrible at times this season, it’s hard to imagine this being anything other than a comprehensive win for Tuchel’s side in Darmstadt.

The home side have conceded a whopping 60 goals this season in the league and, as the Mainz game showed, Bayern are capable of handing out a beating when the mood takes them.

The reigning champions may not get as many as eight, but this should be a comfortable win.

Prediction: Darmstadt 0-4 Bayern Munich
