Mexican boxer Saul Alvarez, commonly known as Canelo, has declined a fight against David Benavidez, sparking widespread criticism.
Despite being the mandatory challenger, Canelo has imposed an extravagant condition for acceptance, demanding a staggering 150 to 200 million dollars for the bout against ‘Red Flag.’
Canelo sets a price for a potential fight with Benavidez: “I will fight tomorrow”
During a conversation with Fight Hub TV, Canelo justified his demand by asserting that, given his accomplishments in his career, he no longer feels the need to prove himself against anyone.
“I would only consider fighting him if a promoter were to offer me 150 or 200 million dollars,” stated Canelo in the interview with Fight Hub TB.
He was also quick to emphasize that he has yet to receive such an offer.
How did Benavidez respond?
In response to Canelo‘s demand, David Benavidez swiftly took to Instagram, delivering a straightforward message in both English and Spanish.
He questioned the exorbitant sum requested by Canelo for a bout against someone he deemed as having no value, expressing a hope that the money would somehow contribute to Canelo finding worth.
“Canelo, if I’m worthless, why demand 150-200 million to fight me? Hopefully, after you earn that money, you’ll have enough left over to buy a few balls,” posted the ‘Mexican Monster.’
Following Alvarez‘s refusal, Benavidez plans to step up to the 175 lbs. weight class for a June bout against former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Should he emerge victorious, ‘Red Flag’ aims to vie for the undisputed light heavyweight championship against the winner of the June 1 clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
Meanwhile, Canelo is set to enter the ring on May 4 to face undefeated Jaime Munguia, a highly anticipated matchup between two Mexican fighters that has generated considerable excitement.
