The Sanders family has made Colorado their home. Deion, the family patriarch and the university’s head football coach, is looking to build a powerhouse program in Boulder, while sons Shedeur and Shilo look like promising NFL Draft prospects entering a huge 2024 season later this year.
But Deion’s daughter Shelomi has not found instant success in Boulder. Playing for Colorado’s women’s basketball team, Shelomi found it difficult to accrue minutes during the 2023/24 season, and now she is switching schools for next season — a decision supported by an unexpected source.

In what is perhaps a veiled shot at Deion, Shelomi’s mother Pilar — Deion’s ex-wife — responded on Instagram to Shelomi’s decision to leave the Colorado women’s team. In a reply posted underneath her daughter’s announcement post, Pilar Sanders wrote “you gotta put you first, baby” in all caps — a loving message and even a rebuke of Deion’s desire to remain physically close to his children.
There’s little argument that Shelomi will benefit from re-entering the portal. As a redshirt freshman on a team that battled Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in this season’s NCAA Tournament, Shelomi — who, like her brothers, transferred from Jackson State last year — played only five games and saw a combined 12 minutes of action across the entire season. The guard attempted six shots and scored three points in her reserve role.
Shelomi’s next step will be fascinating as she steps outside the long shadow that her father casts. The 20-year-old Texas native still has three years of eligibility left, giving her plenty of time to find her place and bolster her reputation in college basketball.
