Boxing fans often forget that before Tyson Fury decided to take on Deontay Wilder, the American boxer was undefeated and believed to be the hardest puncher in the business. That was proven on the very first fight the ‘Gypsy King’ had against Wilder. On the final rounds, Fury was rocked like he had never been in his career before. He somehow managed to get back up and finish the fight with dominance. That was the only draw in Tyson Fury’s career but two more fights against Wilder proved he was the better boxer. In spite of that, you don’t come out unscathed after fighting the most feared puncher in modern boxing history. Coach Malik Scott is convinced Tyson Fury has fundamentally changed after getting inside the ring with his trainee.

Mike Tyson reacts to Ngannou’s final round hit on Tyson Fury: I told him to use it

Speaking to FightHype, Scott said: “Even Fury believes the Deontay Wilde fights changed him. You don’t have three fights with Wilder and it doesn’t change you. Every fight he’s had with Deontay, these weren’t one or two-round fights. He’s gone over 24 rounds with the hardest puncher in the history of the sport. People are highlighting the times he got knocked down, but what about the punches he was taking in the fight, taking good shots and coming back. Those shots are damaging too. He’s 35 years young but to me Fury has put a lot of wear and tear on his body. Not just the Deontay fights, early on in his career he took damage in the first [Derek] Chisora fight, he was knocked down with [Steve] Cunningham. The gym, he’s always had high-quality sparring. He’s 35 but father time is undefeated.”

Is that the reason Tyson Fury almost lost against Francis Ngannou?

Tyson Fury’s cryptonite might be the hardest punchers but a boxer who can take him into deep waters might be the one that takes the belt from him. Oleksandr Usyk represents that possibility and people are already savoring the moment when Fury fights the Ukrainian boxer. Altough Tyson was victorious from that trilogy against Wilder, there is a good indication he took serious damage after those three fights. Fury has hardly shown the same level of dominance in any of his fights after that trilogy. We need to wait and see how he fares against Usyk and see if he has what it takes to become the unified champion.
