Doc Rivers has officially assumed the mantle of head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, taking over for the recently fired Adrian Griffin.

Although Rivers won’t make his true debut on the sideline until Monday against the Denver Nuggets, Saturday was the first time we’ve heard him speak in public since he accepted the job.

Doc Rivers’ first comments as Bucks head coach

At his first press conference, Rivers admitted “it’s great to be back” but followed it up with a peculiar comment that caught the attention of fans.

I’ve never done this. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. It’s going to be a challenge.

Rivers was answering a question about taking over for a team midseason, but non-Bucks fans were stunned that Rivers would essentially give himself an excuse from the get-go just in case things don’t work out later in the season.

He’s taking over a team that’s 31-14, so it’s not like he’s taking on a job that requires a ton of work to win games. His quote on a Bleacher Report graphic has already quickly become a meme.

Although Rivers is taking over a perennial winner, there definitely is pressure for him to go deep in the NBA Playoffs. He’ll have to recapture some of the postseason magic that has eluded his teams since the late 2010s.
