On 29 June, Dominican pitcher Domingo German managed a ‘perfect game’ in the Yankees‘ 0-11 win over the Athletics in Oakland. It had only happened 24 times in MLB‘s storied history. It hadn’t happened in the last 11 years. German, controversial for a past filled with sanctions and controversy, touched the sky.

That same night in San Francisco, his teammates invited him for drinks at the hotel, but he retreated to his room to talk to family members on the phone. He knew temptation lived downstairs. The Yankees have just announced that German will miss the entire season after agreeing to voluntarily undergo a rehabilitation programme for alcoholism. He will have to check himself into a hospital.

The fine line between success and failure, between heaven and hell, so pervasive in American professional sports was again evident in the Yankees‘ ever exemplary announcement. “German has dealt with alcohol abuse in the past, but now he’s had a more recent situation, a serious problem.” So said the general manager of the 27-time World Series franchise, Brian Cashman.

German was more famous in the competition for suspensions than for his play. In May of this season, he had been suspended for 10 games for using a foreign substance, a glue for which he was ejected from a game against the Blue Jays. Earlier, in 2020, he was given an 81-game suspension for violating domestic violence rules.
