There is serious concern for the Dallas Mavericks.

Luka Doncic could miss the start of the NBA season due to the left calf strain he suffered in a practice before facing Real Madrid at the WiZink Center last week.

For the time being, he will not be able to play against the Pistons in his team’s final warm-up game and his progress will dictate how long he will be out.

At the Mavs’ final workout, coach Jason Kidd said the Slovenian point guard would be “re-evaluated later” and expressed hope that he would be available for the first game of the season, scheduled for October 25 at the home of Victor Wembanyama‘s San Antonio Spurs.

During the workout, Doncic was only able to do some static cycling and take a few shots at the basket.

The Slovenian player suffered the injury while training on October 9 in Madrid, which meant he could only play the first five minutes of the game against his former team. In principle, he was not going to take the court, but given the emotional nature of the match, he insisted on being able to play in front of the fans who love him.

Abu Dhabi and Madrid tour

After finishing the 12-day tour that also took the Mavericks to Abu Dhabi, Doncic underwent an MRI that confirmed an ailment that the player himself described as “nothing serious” during the post-game press conference at the WiZink Center.

The Mavericks hope that the evolution is good and that they can count on their star player for the start of the season.

Kyrie Irving, who was out for the last two games on the Dallas team’s tour, should also be available. The point guard, having overcome the pain in his left groin, was able to participate fully in the last training session.
