Luka Doncic has expressed optimism about improved chemistry with Kyrie Irving during the Dallas Mavericks‘ training camp, acknowledging that it couldn’t be worse than last season.

In 2022/23, the two stars played only 16 games together, resulting in a disappointing 5-11 record.

The Mavericks struggled, losing 18 of their last 25 regular season games, finishing with a 38-44 record, ranking 11th in the Western Conference and missing the playoffs.

“[Irving] came in the middle of the season last year and we went straight to playing games,” Doncic said.

“It takes time to build chemistry, especially on the court.

“We’ll have the whole training camp and pre-season, so I think it’s going to be way better.”

Jason Kidd’s optimism about the next Dallas Mavericks season

Coach Jason Kidd is also confident that his two stars will help the team bounce back next season.

“We like things that happen right away, but we will continue to grow that relationship,” Kidd said.

“There is a relationship and they had the summer and now they have a pre-season to bond.

“But, that’s the big question: Can they coexist?

“And it is not that they don’t coexist, it’s the group around them.

“I think sometimes we are misinformed. If you have the right pieces around, they’re going to coexist, and after day one they coexisted at a high level.”
