Dusty Baker has officially announced his retirement from his role as the manager of the Houston Astros in MLB. This decision was conveyed to the team’s owner, Jim Crane, in a private meeting.
Baker will hold a press conference at Minute Maid Park, scheduled for Thursday, during which he is expected to publicly confirm his retirement.
“I’m very grateful and thankful to Jim Crane and the Houston Astros for giving me this opportunity, and to win a championship,” Baker told USA TODAY Sports.
“I felt like they’ve been good for me, and I’ve been good for them. What I really appreciate is that Jim has been totally honest and transparent with me on all things.
“I’ve still got a lot to offer; baseball has been my life. I have a lifetime of knowledge, much more than those who have never played the game.”
Staying connected to baseball
While Baker intends to stay connected to baseball in an advisory capacity, either with the Astros or a team closer to his California home, he has chosen to end his 26-season managerial career on his own terms.

The 74-year-old manager had always believed he would retire after this season, irrespective of the Astros’ performance. The stresses of the season and other factors have affirmed his decision.
Baker leaves the Astros after a successful stint that saw the team achieve four consecutive American League Championship Series (ALCS) berths, two pennants, and a World Series championship.
He ranks seventh in career victories with 2,183 wins and is expected to be a unanimous selection for the Hall of Fame in three years, potentially becoming the first Black manager inducted into Cooperstown.
