Ryan Garcia’s currently going through a hectic 2024 after a series of strange social media posts and actions in general.

But now that might be set to strike his boxing career into jeopardy as Eddie Hearn calls for a lifetime ban if he’s found to have been intentionally using performance enhancing drugs.

Ryan Garcia admits he fought Devin Haney on drugs, but not steroids

The scandal comes after Garcia defeated Devin “The Dream” Haney in a fight where he demolished the American fighter by sending him to the canvas on several different occasions.

But it was already controversial because he missed weight for the super-lightweight title offered by the WBC, and now the storm has been whipped into even more of a frenzy as he was found to have had ostarine in his system.

Not just once did he fail the test for the performance enhancing drug, it happened again on April 19 and April 20 leading to an outpour of rage at the 25-year-old with some even going as far to say that his actions could have killed Haney in the ring. Hearn believes it should be a ban.

“He should never be allowed to fight again,” said Hearn, one of the sports biggest promoters in what is a massive statement from one of the most influential men in boxing.

“He entered the ring with performance enhancing drugs in his system, and now he has to prove he didn’t take them intentionally. If he didn’t take them intentionally, I feel really sorry for him and I hope innocence prevails.

“If he did take them intentionally and he cheated, that’s another story and he should arguably never be able to fight again…You see clips of him with IV drips, it ain’t a good look.”

How long could Garcia be banned for?

We only need to look to another current fighter to be able to work out how long Garcia might be banned for as Conor Benn was also disqualified from competing after testing positive for clomifene.

Like Garcia, he also tested positive for the PED and has protested his own innocence, but the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) isn’t interested and rejected his appeal, despite the National Anti-Doping Panel lifting the ban in 2023.

He managed to squeeze in two fights before the BBBoC got the ban put back in place but that means he’s fought twice since April 2022 and has his WBA Continental welterweight title stripped.
