The final September qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship take place across the continent on Tuesday.

While host nation Germany are guaranteed a spot next summer – although who knows which manager will be in charge – the qualification process for everyone else drags on until November before the play-offs decide the final three places.

Former European champions Spain and Italy continue to play catch up as two of the headliners in the upcoming spate of qualifiers while Erling Haaland’s Norway and perennial dark horses Belgium will also be in action.

Here is everything you need to know about Tuesday’s matches.

All times are BST.

Norway and Georgia’s two superstars have enjoyed and endured remarkably contrasting routes to success. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, the son of two professional athletes who have carefully picked each club to supercharge his meteoric and choreographed ascent, jars with Napoli’s scruffy, anarchic Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, both were voted the best player of their respective divisions last season and should spearhead an intriguing Group A clash.

Amid all the turmoil of the Luis Rubiales scandal, Spain’s men’s team swatted aside Georgia with a 7-1 thrashing on Friday night, diverting some of the focus onto the prodigious rise of teenage record-breaker Lamine Yamal.

That victory nudged Spain into second place in Group A, a position they are expected to consolidate against a nation that has lost all four of its qualifiers thus far. Scotland, incidentally, are the runaway group leaders.

Ukraine’s last competitive fixture on Italian soil was a 4-0 humbling to England in the quarter-final of Euro 2020. Oddly enough, Ukraine have only lost to members of the British home nations (England, Wales and Scotland) in the last two years.

The Azzurri would go on to win the continental tournament in 2021 by beating the Three Lions at Wembley but also lost to England during the last match in Italy.

Malta are feeble travellers – they went in 0-0 at half-time away to San Marino last year – but they pack more of a punch on home turf.

Boosted by a friendly victory over fellow minnows Gibraltar on Wednesday, Malta are aiming to collect their first points of the qualification campaign against North Macedonia on Tuesday.

At the halfway stage of the qualification campaign, Belgium have already amassed double digits for points, taking their tally to ten from four games with a 1-0 win away to Azerbaijan on Saturday.

Domenico Tedesco is yet to lose as Belgium manager and will be expected to maintain that unbeaten streak against an Estonia team ranked outside the top 100.

As Manchester United fans can attest, Ralf Rangnick needs time with a team to bed in his ideas. Austria lost four of their first six matches under Rangnick once he took over in June 2022 but have made an unbeaten start to European qualifying.

Two goals in the last ten minutes from Christoph Baumgartner snatched a win for Austria when they hosted Sweden in June. Another win, perhaps in less dramatic circumstances, would strengthen Austria’s impressive qualification campaign.

Less than a week before Israel host one of Russia’s staunchest supporters, the nation’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met his counterpart in Kyiv to discuss how they could help Ukraine in the ongoing war.

Football and politics remain as intertwined as ever but recent sporting events also give this game an edge. Israel trailed Belarus going into the final five minutes of their qualifier in June only to snatch three crucial points at the death in the race for qualification.

Since these nations last met in June, Kosovo pulled the trigger and fired French icon Alain Giresse as manager. The European Championsip-winning player was replaced with Primoz Gliha, who used to play for Chamois Niort in Ligue 2, as caretaker manager.

Romania made a strong start to the qualification campaign under Edward Iordanescu and even snatched a 2-2 draw against Switzerland in Lucerne – theoretically the toughest game Group I has to offer – courtesy of a three-minute brace from Valentin Mihaila right at the death.

Switzerland have not only qualified for the last four major international tournaments but made it out of the group stage on each occasion.

Murat Yakin’s side are heavy favourites to top Group I, let alone for the upcoming home game against Andorra. However, Koldo Alvarez has overseen steady improvement as manager of the tiny Principality. Andorra were not even ranked by FIFA in December 2011 but have climbed up to 154th (out of 208) in the world.
