Ezekiel Elliott could still make a return to the Dallas Cowboys during the off-season and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made a bold statement about the events of the past.
Elliott is a player that Cowboys fans remember fondly, but his time with the franchise did not come to the end that many would have expected.
The running back was a graduate from OSU and he was regarded as one of the best players in his position for many years.
In 2019, Jones and the Cowboys opted to reward Elliott for his fine form with a massive new contract that would run for six years and see Elliott earn 90 million dollars.
That made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history at the time, although that mantle has since been taken by Christian McCaffrey at the San Francisco 49ers.
Not long after Elliott had signed that extension, his form declined and his production was nowhere near the same rate as it had been in the past, finishing with fewer than 1,000 rushing yards in two of his last three years in Dallas.
He ended up being released after the 2022 season and the massive contract was viewed as a big mistake from Jones and the Cowboys.
Jones discusses Elliott’s contract
Now, Jones has decided to address the thinking behind that contract and whether he would fall into the same trap again in the future.
Speaking at the NFL owner’s meeting in Orlando, Jones said: “What I can do for our fans is I can learn from what we did with Zeke. I can learn. I can look back and make that comparison. And I’m more likely to learn from that than some new face. I really am. I believe that – as long as I do my homework and got my energy.”
