The New England Patriots have injected some much-needed depth into their running back squad by bringing in Ezekiel Elliott. But the question on everyone’s mind is, how much will this addition cost? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Elliott’s contract spans one year and could reach a total of $6 million.

However, it’s not as straightforward as it seems. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio breaks down the details, revealing that Elliott will need to put in some work to unlock the full $6 million. His base salary starts at $1.55 million, coupled with a $600,000 signing bonus. Additionally, he stands to earn an active roster bonus of $50,000 for each game he plays in, potentially totaling $850,000 if he participates in all 17 regular-season games, making a sum of $3 million.

The remaining $3 million hinges on his performance in terms of snaps and yards gained from scrimmage. Florio outlines the incentives as follows: for yards from scrimmage, Elliott could earn $300,000 for reaching 975, 1,100, 1,225, 1,350, and 1,475 yards, making a total of $1,500,000. In terms of offensive snaps, he could garner $300,000 for hitting 50 percent, 55 percent, 60 percent, 65 percent, and 70 percent, resulting in another $1,500,000.

Florio highlights that for Elliott to secure the entire $6 million from the Patriots, he’ll need to play in every regular-season game, command 70 percent of the offensive snaps, and rush for 1,475 yards from scrimmage – a tall order indeed.

It’ll be hard to Zeke to earn $6 million in 2023

Although Elliott, a three-time Pro Bowler, achieved 1,475 yards only once in his career, back in his rookie season in 2016, replicating that feat while sharing snaps with Rhamondre Stevenson seems challenging. Notably, Stevenson spoke about the compatibility of their skill sets, and Mac Jones gave his thumbs up for the former Cowboys running back.

Elliott has already joined the Patriots for practice in Green Bay, signaling a positive start to his time with the team. With his contract intricacies now laid out, the Patriots seem to have structured a team-friendly deal that puts the ball in Elliott’s court – a true test of his capabilities.
