Memphis Depay appeared to get injured after running into the referee during the first half of The Netherlands’ game against Austria.

Depay and Co were looking to top Group D at Euro 2024 after securing qualification for the last 16 of the competition, and had trailed at the break through an own goal from Donyell Malen.

Cody Gakpo netted in the second half to square things up, but not before a comedic moment that saw forward Depay trip over the leg of referee Ivan Kruzliak on the edge of the box.

The former Manchester United forward could be seen trying to close down Marcel Sabitzer, with Kruzliak in the way, and Depay falling to the floor slowly after the two collided.

He then lay on the floor grabbing his leg, and fans on social media were quick to mock him for the apparent injury.

‘Memphis Depay has just run directly into the referee, dived and then pretended to be injured,’ one user posted on X, formerly Twitter. ‘What a fascinating player.’

Another wrote: ‘Depay just got bodied by the referee,’ accompanied by a laughing emoji.

A third added: ‘Memphis Depay really isn’t a very good footballer is he. Sulky, moody, no pace or passion Sums him up when he feigns injury after falling into the ref.’

Depay scored his first goal at Euro 2024 in the game, with his side going 2-1 down in the second half after an impressive header from Romano Schmid before he squared things up.

It had appeared that the goal would be ruled out for handball, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.

Sabitzer then, however, made it 3-2 to Austria, which was how it finished.

In total, he has netted 45 times in 94 appearances for his country, having made his debut over a century ago.

The forward had struggled in Germany prior to the game, which his side ended up losing 3-2

At club, level, however, he has struggled to settle, leaving United after just two years in 2017, going onto play for Lyon and Barcelona.

Now, he is with Atletico Madrid in Spain, and has scored 13 goals for them in 40 games since signing in January 2023.
