A busy road in Batley was submerged by flood water earlier this evening.

Carlinghow Lane was closed following the flood at the junction of Ealand Road and Coal Pit Mews. It followed a downpour of sudden and heavy rainfall.

Images show the pavement completely underwater, with wheelie bins knocked over and traffic at a complete standstill. The road was closed but has since reopened.

Met Office weather warning map for Tuesday, June 18

The flooding comes as Yorkshire continues to be hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms this evening (Tuesday) as a yellow weather warning from the Met Office remains in place.

Forecasters issued the yellow weather warning for today, Tuesday, June 18, to run from 11am to 9pm today, with the risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms and possible travel disruption.

The Met Office said: “There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.”

The forecasters also warned of possible damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes, as well as some short term loss of power. Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures, the Met Office added.

The Met Office published a map of the yellow weather warning. The affected area includes a large swathe of Yorkshire including Huddersfield, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford and north towards York and the Yorkshire Dales.

In Batley, Kirklees, Carlinghow Lane was closed for some time following a flood at the junction of Ealand Road and Coal Pit Mews. A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “Carlinghow Lane is now open after a flood at junction of Ealand Rd and Coal Pit Mews, Batley caused by sudden heavy rainfall. There is a yellow warning for thunderstorms in place until 9pm.”
