Francis Ngannou once tasted the thrill of boxing, and now he has no plans to give it up. The former mixed martial arts (MMA) champion assured that he came to boxing to stay and already has a list of those he wants to face after his fight with Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder is one of them.
For almost 11 years, the French-Cameroonian fighter has been one of the most fearsome presences in the MMA rings. Ngannou has 20 fights under his belt with 17 wins, 12 by knockout, and three losses. He was the UFC heavyweight champion and is currently one of the idols of the PFL.
With an impeccable track record and after overcoming great challenges in MMA, Ngannou decided to make the leap to boxing, where he debuted in a highly publicized fight against former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
The fight took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 28, 2023. Ngannou knew how to get Fury in trouble, and he knocked him down in the third round; however, he could not complete the task, and in the end, the judges gave the victory to Fury by a controversial split decision.
Ngannou is here to stay
Far from intimidating him, the defeat against Fury awakened in Ngannou the desire to continue trying his luck in boxing. “I’m here for the boxing career, and there I have a lot of challenges, a lot of names,” Ngannou said in an interview with Sky Sports’ MMA Club.
Francis explained, “For example, the top three guys that I’ve always had are Fury, Joshua, and Wilder.” He faced Fury in October and will clash with Joshua on March 8, so there is only one of those names left on the list.
Wilder suffered a career setback in December with an unexpected loss to Joseph Parker. For now, the “Bronze Bomber” has not declared anything about his immediate future, but he had previously said that he was willing to face Ngannou.
Anything is possible: Ngannou
Months ago, the American said he would like to have two fights with the French-Cameroonian: one in boxing and another in a “mixed rule” match. The setback against Parker put these plans in doubt, but Ngannou assured that if Wilder” can get it together,” he is ready for the fight.
Ngannou recalled, “Two months ago, we were talking about fighting Deontay Wilder in the PFL. The landscape can change quickly. Everything is possible.”
If Ngannou gives a good performance against Joshua and Wilder manages to return to boxing with a victory, it would not take long for one of the most anticipated fights by fans to become a reality.
