Fred is set to miss the start of Manchester United‘s pre-season tour to the USA after being given permission to stay at home to deal with a ‘personal issue’.

United’s 31-man squad departed for the US just hours after they beat Lyon 1-0 in a friendly at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, but the club confirmed the Brazilian, 30, would not be on the plane.

In a statement, United said Fred, who played 45 minutes in the pre-season friendly victory over the French side, ‘is expected to join up with the rest of the squad shortly’.

Internationals who missed the games against Leeds in Oslo last week and Lyon in Scotland on Wednesday after being given additional time off, including Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, have all been named in the touring squad.

Andre Onana is having his medical at United ahead of sealing a £47million move to Old Trafford and will fly out to join his new team mates as soon as it is completed.

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly wasn’t named on the pre-season tour squad and is expected to leave the club on a permanent transfer after returning from his loan at Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Mason Mount, Erik ten Hag’s first signing of the summer transfer window after joining from Chelsea for £60m, is among the other notable names, alongside a host of youth stars who have played key roles in United’s first two pre-season matches. Dean Henderson has also been selected for the tour but is on the verge of joining Nottingham Forest.

United open their USA tour against Arsenal in New Jersey on Saturday, before they take on Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

A separate group featuring Jonny Evans are heading to San Diego ahead of the Wrexham match, where Ten Hag will field an academy side

Ten Hag’s side conclude pre-season with back-to-back matches with Lens at Old Trafford and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.
