Gary Neville believes Manchester United fans should be worried by the nature of their 3-1 defeat to Brighton after being ‘dismantled’ by the Seagulls at Old Trafford.

United were outclassed in every department by the visitors as Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro secured a dominant 3-1 win.

Defeat handed Erik ten Hag a first home loss since Brighton beat United at Old Trafford on the opening day of last season.

Ex-United defender Neville hit out at United’s American owners, the Glazer family, after the match and insisted there was a ‘culture of greed’ at the club that is causing problems on the pitch.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday, Neville praised Roberto de Zerbi‘s side for being ‘clinical and precise’.

‘United started well in the game but as soon as Brighton started to compose themselves and put a few passes together, United played a very narrow midfield and once Brighton started to get it out in the first half on the right-hand side it was a real problem,’ said Neville on Sky Sports.

‘They cut you open Brighton, they are clinical and precise and they dismantled Manchester United.

‘That is definitely the right word, they dismantled them and it was what most Manchester United fans before the game thought might happen did happen which is worrying.’

United have lost three of their opening five matches for the first time in the Premier League and any pre-season optimism has been extinguished in dire circumstances.

Ten Hag is under pressure for the first time as United manager with Old Trafford booing his decision to substitute Rasmus Hojlund in favour of Anthony Martial in the second-half.

However, the Dutchman denied suggestions after the game that United are in crisis but expressed concern over his side’s torrid start to the new season.

‘Definitely, that is something that bothers me. But finally it’s about character and now we have to see how strong we are and how the team sticks together and which players stand up and lead the team,’ he added.

‘We need character, belief, resilience and determination absolutely.’
