FIFA president Gianni Infantino was present at the CONMEBOL Legends match and the soccer chief referred to the future of Argentina’s Lionel Messi, calling on the 36-year-old to keep on going until the 2034 centenary edition of the World Cup.

When questioned about the future of Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami as their captain, expressed his desire for La Pulga to keep on playing until he is 47.

“We talked about the match, about the World Cup of course,” Infantino said to DSports. “Chiqui Tapia, world champion, like all of Argentina. We remembered the last World Cup and planned the next ones.

“We are very well, all happy, all in agreement, 2026, will be the first 48-team World Cup, it will be huge. It will be here in America, in the United States, Mexico and Canada. It will be a soccer party, a total success, I’m sure.

“I hope he makes it to the next World Cup, the one after that and the one in 2034 as well. Whenever he wants.”

Infantino reviews Legends game

Stars such as Ronaldinho, Carlos Valderrama, and Sergio Aguero, took to the pitch in a game that finished 2-1 to Team Tango over Team Sambo.

Some of the players have not been active for decades but showed that they’ve still got it as they mixed it up with other legends of the game and specifically the South American theater of soccer.

“They are all phenomena,” Infantino said to DSports. “I was on the field the whole first half; but to play, the others play. I watch the game. With these champions it’s a unique pleasure.

“I enjoyed it very much, especially to see all these incredible champions, legendary soccer players who make us move every time we see them, champions of the heart and champions of the people. Very happy.”
