Lindley is already a fantastic place for dining and it just got better.

Two friends, Palwinder Singh and Harjinder Singh, opened Gurparsad in the Huddersfield suburb on Tuesday this week, so I called in at lunchtime to find it already busy with people waiting patiently for orders, both eating in and taking away.

Gurparsad, which means ‘Blessing of the Guru’, has a focus on Indian-style food and is a meat-free establishment in keeping with Sikh beliefs of the Singhs, who both hail from Huddersfield.

I had been looking forward to the curry options but the full menu wasn’t quite available, so I opted for a mixed naan (£6.95) which featured thin strips of a meat alternative that I was told was pea protein and/or soya. It was tasty and came with a zingy dressing and a generous portion of fresh lettuce, cucumber and red onion. Ordinarily I would be eating chicken, but this pretend meat was satisfyingly chewy with a texture that I can live with, although I am not convinced soya is better for me, or indeed the planet, than animal meat.

For good measure, I also ordered some side dishes to take away for later. Both the two springs rolls (£3.75) and the samosa chaat (£3.75) were splendid, with the right amount of spices, and good value for money. I can see Gurparsad doing a good trade in takeaway Indian food.

I had a quick chat with Palwinder, known as Pally, who explained that they only had ‘half a menu’ for the time being and that the curry dishes would be available soon.

As an Indian drum beat played in the background, Palwinder said “everything is 100% freshly made” and explained how he hoped the restaurant and takeaway would appeal to Sikhs with strict dietary requirements as well as lovers of vegetarian and vegan food.

I had a browse of the menu which included burgers and pizzas, Indian starters, and a good number of Indian sweets and cakes, from gulab jaman ice cream to ras malai.

It’s a strictly vegetarian restaurant and, in keeping with the Sikh faith, is also alcohol free. I turned the menu over and came across the three House Rules which I hadn’t expected.

One rule is that “Children must remain seated at all times. For everyone’s safety, please ensure children remain seated and supervised in the dining area.”

A second rules states: “Respect your dining space” and urges customers to “please keep your belongings within your designated area. Let’s maintain a welcoming atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.”

The third rule asks diners not to bring “outside food or drink” into the restaurant “to preserve the quality and ambience of our dining experience.”

So it seems the Singhs will be running a tight ship and I wouldn’t argue with that.

Gurparsad is open from 11am to 8pm Tuesday to Sundays and can be found on Lidget Street, Lindley, Huddersfield.
