Jamie Carragher insisted Manchester City‘s penalty in Sunday’s derby game was harshl awarded as ‘it looks a lot worse in slow motion’.

Rasmus Hojlund was viewed to have brought down City midfielder Rodri with a tug just inside the area in the first half.

Hojlund stuck out his left arm and pulled down the Spanish midfielder, with referee Paul Tierney pointing to the spot after a lengthy VAR review, which involved a second look at the pitchside monitor.

Erling Haaland cooly tucked away the penalty to put Pep Guardiola‘s side in front in the derby, before they went on to run out 3-0 winners.

However Carragher insisted these types of incidents happen to plenty of Premier League sides and United could feel slightly hard done by that it was given against them.

Speaking at half-time on Sky Sports, Carragher insisted: ‘I’m not saying it’s not a foul but this happens constantly, virtually in every game and you won’t see penalties given for it so I feel a bit for Manchester United because every team could show an incident like this where they feel that they should have had a pen.’

‘Yes, he’s lost and he panics and the left arm comes out. Like everything, it looks a lot worse in slow motion. When you watch that in real time, as it happened.’

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards concurred saying: ‘I agree, but it’s just where was it going to end up? I think that was taken into consideration.

‘As he grabbed him back there he might have got a head on that. It’s soft but it’s the rules of the game. It’s definitely there. It’s a foul.’

Also speaking on the incident at half-time was United legend Roy Keane who argued that Rodri had to go down in the area despite it being viewed as soft.

Keane argued: ‘They’ve got to make the most of their opportunities. I think Rodri has to go down for a penalty.

‘I’m not saying for players to cheat, but we see it all the time. If he actually falls into the goalkeeper, I think if he goes down there and kicks into the goalkeeper, I think that’s a penalty. These are big moments.’
