Julio Urias is once again in legal trouble with another domestic violence charge against him, and the pitcher has plead no contest to it in front of a judge on Thursday.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers star was sentenced to 36 months on probation which included 30 days of community service and mandatory attendance at a domestic violence counselling course.

His right to own firearms has been revoked, whilst he must also make a financial donation to a domestic violence charity.

The fact that this punishment appears so lenient is a surprise to many given the fact Urias is a repeat offender in this regard.

What charges has Julio Urias faced previously?

In 2019, Urias faced a 20-game suspension under the league’s combined policy on domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, though he was never formally charged with a crime. His troubles resurfaced in September 2023 when he was arrested again following allegations stemming from a public altercation captured on cell phone video after an LAFC Major League match. He was released from custody upon posting a $50,000 bond.

Documents from the District Attorney’s Office in January detailed accusations that Urias had “pushed the victim against a fence and pulled her by the hair or shoulders.”

However, the case was referred to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office for misdemeanor charges rather than felonies. Last month, the L.A. City Attorney brought five misdemeanor charges against Urias, including spousal battery, domestic battery related to a dating relationship, assault, and false imprisonment.

As the criminal proceedings wind down, Major League Baseball will likely conclude its own investigation into the matter.

MLB placed Urias on paid administrative leave just two days after the incident – a standard practice for players under investigation for issues covered by the joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. While administrative leave isn’t considered punitive, any pay accrued during this period can be rescinded if criminal charges are filed or if MLB deems a suspension necessary following its investigation.

Should MLB impose a suspension following Urias’ no-contest plea, he will be the first player in history to receive multiple suspensions under the league’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. Urias entered free agency after the 2024 season and remains unsigned.
