Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr., a four-year NBA veteran, was taken into custody on Monday in New York City following allegations of domestic violence against his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick, according to police sources.
Alleged assault in NYC hotel
The incident unfolded early Monday morning at the Millennium Hotel in Times Square, where Porter and Gondrezick were staying.
Sources suggest that an argument ensued when Gondrezick expressed displeasure with Porter’s late return.
Reportedly, she locked the door, prompting Porter to seek assistance from hotel security. From then the altercation escalated, resulting in injuries to Gondrezick.
While the extent of Gondrezick’s injuries remains unclear, she was reportedly found with a laceration on the right side of her face and neck pain.
Preliminary investigations by the NYPD indicate that Porter physically assaulted Gondrezick and strangled her.
KPJ’s NBA career so far
This arrest marks a distressing turn of events for the 23-year-old NBA player, who was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft.
Porter’s tenure with the Cavaliers was marred by off-court incidents, including an outburst due to a locker change in January of 2021 that ultimately led to him being traded to Houston.
KPJ recently signed a substantial four-year, $82.5 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets.
The point guard averaged 19.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game for Houston in the 2022-23 season in 34.3 average minutes on the court.
The impact of these charges on his professional future remains uncertain as the legal process unfolds.
