Joan Laporta analyzed this Sunday lunchtime Xavi‘s announcement to not continue in the bench of Barcelona beyond June. He will not fulfill the contract because of the wear he suffers and, according to his own words, not to burden the team or the club.
The president, who this Sunday morning met with the dressing room at the Ciudad Deportiva, discussed the coach’s decision.

“Xavi told me that at the end of the season he would leave, that he wanted to finish the season, and it is a formula that I accept because he is the one who proposed it to me: he is a legend of Barcelona. He is an honest person and acts with dignity. He loves Barcelona. I accept it because I know that his commitment and that of his staff will be maximum,” he said.
“The moment requires maximum unity. The situation is not pleasant for anyone,” he added.
The Catalan lawyer also referred to the remaining objectives between now and the end of the season: “The league is difficult, but obviously it’s not lost yet. We have to fight to finish as high as possible without ruling out winning it. But we have to put everything we have into trying to win the Champions League. We are going step by step. With commitment, with more character, without losing concentration, with the coach giving his all and with the players fully committed… we can achieve some of our objectives.”
Laporta admitted, however, his frustration at the way the season is going: “On a sporting level, things are not going as we expected. We have just won LaLiga and the Supercopa, and the expectations, after reinforcing the squad, were good and they are not being fulfilled and we have to reverse the situation.”
The president also sent a message to the fans. “At the end of the year, we will return to Camp Nou. I want to thank the people who are responding and going to Montjuic. Against Villarreal, it was the second best entry. I ask you to continue like this. With your support, we will reverse the situation. We know the situation, but the players need your support. The role of the fans is fundamental and I am grateful for what they are doing. They are the best fans in the world.”
