A high-risk sexual predator who is already serving a prison term has been sentenced to more time behind bars after another of his victims was shown media coverage of his case.

Bradford Crown Court heard on Wednesday that back in 2017 Andrew Bristow, and his now deceased accomplice, were locked up for their horrific offending, but when a newspaper article about the case was shown to a young girl she burst into tears and told her parents that she had also been sexually abused by the men.

Her abuse was reported to police in Halifax a few months later and at the magistrates’ court last month Halifax man Bristow, 55, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and his case was committed to the crown court for sentence.

Prosecutor Joel Wootten outlined details of the abuse suffered by the young girl at the hands of Bristow and his co-defendant and the court heard that Bristow had recorded some of it on his mobile phone. After some incidents the girl, who must not be identified for legal reasons, was given sweets and told not to tell her parents.

Barrister Michael Collins, for Bristow, told the court his client had engaged fully with rehabilitation courses while serving his current sentence and was now an enhanced prisoner working as a cleaner. He submitted that the defendant was genuinely remorseful for his offending and he pleaded guilty to the latest offences at the earliest opportunity because he was sorry for what he had done.

Recorder David Kelly said Bristow and his now deceased co-accused had groomed and abused their young victim and his behaviour had been predatory. The judge said the offences had been committed for Bristow’s own sexual gratification without the slightest concern for the long-term trauma it could cause to the complainant. The judge said Bristow had been assessed as posing “a high and imminent risk” to children.

He jailed Bristow for a total of six years and also imposed an extended licence period of five years. Bristow will have to serve two-thirds of it before he would be eligible for release on licence.
