Luka Doncic is one of the biggest names in basketball right now but he did not enjoy the best 2022-23 NBA season with the Dallas Mavericks.
Against all of the odds, Doncic and Kyrie Irving were not able to make it to the NBA Playoffs with the Mavs last season and that caused a lot of pain for the Slovenian star.
He has since been preparing for the FIBA World Cup which he is competing in with Slovenia and he has revealed that the pain of last season has actually been a useful tool for him during the off-season.
Speaking to Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated, Doncic said: “The goal is always the same – to win the championship. Of course, this is a wish, but what actually happens in the competition is another matter,” he said about Dallas‘ season.
Doncic also added how he uses the setbacks in a positive light: “I am very motivated myself, and I was additionally motivated by the failure of my team in the NBA and the failure of Slovenia last year.”
He was quick to add, though that he is certainly not dwelling in the past. When asked about his plans for the World Cup and the next NBA season with the Mavs, Doncic said: “But you always look forward. We don’t care what happened last year.”

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was recently very quick to dismiss supposed interest in LeBron James, by explaining that the Mavs already have Doncic.
When asked about it on Bobbi Althoff‘s ‘The Really Good Podcast’, the billionaire was adamant in denying that there is any possibility of his team wanting to draft ‘King’ James for their cause.
Althoff asked him about the rumour directly: “Is [LeBron James] in the Mavericks‘ plans? Cuban was blunt in his answer: “No, he’s not. And he was asked again: “Are they trying to sign him? To which Cuban gave an emphatic answer to settle the issue: “No, we have a guy named Luka Doncic“.
