Prime TV’s cameras caught the former Lakers point-guard in the stands during the fourth quarter of the game, as Washington attempted to mount a comeback. His expression, lacking his trademark smile, said it all. After a valiant effort in the third quarter, Washington succumbed to Bears’ receiver DJ Moore’s three touchdowns.

The former Lakers star was excited this summer after Josh Harris’ $6.05 billion bid went through, a purchase that included his minority bid. Johnson, who also has a stake in championship-winning teams like the MLS’ Los Angeles FC and WNBA’s L.A. Sparks, knows what winning teams look like from the inside-out. Washington (2-3), seems to be lacking that winning formula the other Magic-owned teams have displayed over the years.
The Commanders’ embarrassing prime time loss against the previously winless Chicago Bears made Magic Johnson do what no owner has done publicly in more than three decades at Washington: call the team out publicly. Which, in itself, is a breath of fresh air for the classic D.C. franchise.
The prime time loss could have sealed the fate of head coach Ron Rivera, who was appointed in the Dan Snyder era, and has a losing record of 24-30-1 as Washington’s coach.
