Manchester United have been drawn against Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray in the group stages of the 2023/24 Champions League.

The Red Devils are back in European football’s top tier competition after a single-season absence, having secured a third-place finish in the Premier League under new boss Erik ten Hag.

United have plenty of pedigree in the competition, winning the old European Cup in 1967/68 before claiming the rebranded Champions League in 1998/99 and 2007/08, but it’s been over a decade since they really threatened to mix it with Europe’s top brass.

Pitted as second seeds for the draw, United will take on Bayern Munich in Group A, who they know well, and also FC Copenhagen of Denmark and Galatasaray of Turkey.

Here’s United record against all three in years gone by.

Bayern Munich

Manchester United and Bayern Munich are no strangers to each other, meeting 11 times in competitive competition.

It’s not a fixture United have tended to do too well in, but they arguably came out on top in the most important game of all – the 1999 Champions League final. Trailing to Mario Basler’s early goal at Camp Nou, United hit back to score two dramatic goals in injury time through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in one of the most extraordinary comebacks ever seen.

United’s only other win came in the second leg of their 2009/10 Champions League quarter-final clash at Old Trafford, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a defeat on the away goals rule.

FC Copenhagen

United should have a slightly easier time of it against a side they’ve only ever faced three times, FC Copenhagen.

Many supporters would assume United boast a 100 per cent winning record in the fixture, given the stature of the club compared to their Danish counterparts. However, their 3-0 success in the 2006/07 Champions League group stage clash at Old Trafford was soured by a shocking defeat two weeks later in the return fixture.

Things weren’t much easier in the quarter-finals of the 2019/20 Europa League either, with United only scraping through in extra time because of Bruno Fernandes’ 95th-minute penalty. The game was played in neutral territory, in Cologne, because of Covid-19 restrictions on travel.

Galatasaray

United’s final group stage opponents, Galatasaray, are a team they first encountered in the 1993/94 edition of the Champions League.

Those two games ended in draws, with United crashing out of the competition on away goals after Galatasaray secured a 3-3 scoreline at Old Trafford. They met again the following year, drawing in Turkey before United ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at home – a match that saw a young David Beckham join Roy Keane on the scoresheet.

It wasn’t until 2012/13 that the pair locked horns again, with United winning their group stage home tie 1-0 before Galatasaray returned the favour almost two months later.
